How to Change “Leave a Reply” Title on WordPress Comments

Note: Obsolete with Headway 2.0.7 because the new theme now overwrites that function and defines the title. If your using Headway 2.0.7, you can now change the “Leave a Reply” button in the comments.php file for the Headway 2.0.7 theme in the WordPress Dashboard. Standby for a simpler, upcoming tutorial.

The default “Leave a Reply” title can only be changed in WordPress’ source code. Headway Themes does not provide an easy option to make this change so you will need to make this change directly on a wordpress file. In this tutorial, you will need to search for the wordpress file, edit using notepad and re-upload the file.

Some people like to change this to a different word like “comments” or “discussion” but be careful when making changes on your source files – keep a backup copy of the original files and always remember where these files are located so you can reverse the process.

Step 1: Get the file

Using an FTP, download the file from your wordpress’ wp-includes folder.

Location of File

File: comment-template.php
Folder: ../wordpress/wp-includes/comment-template.php

Step 2: Search the word “Leave a Reply”

Using a notepad, search for the word “Leave a Reply” and you will find at least 4 of them. I noticed that changing the word “Leave a Reply” below “function comment_form_title” reflects in Headway Theme (line 1198 if your notepad displays numbers). Simply change the existing word to what you want it to be and make sure to put it inside the existing single quote.

Step 3: Save the file and reupload

Save the text file and re-upload in the same location you took it from. Take note that this modification can revert back to original when you update your wordpress to a newer version. What important is that you know how to change it the next time around. Studying a little PHP for fun doesn’t hurt either.

Changing this text is great advice.

Changing the default “0 comments” to something more interesting and engaging is also a good idea. Perhaps, “Leave a comment, handsome.” That’s much more personal than “0 comments.”

Thanks Brian, your comment is the most valuable comment on the website since it’s the first. Looking forward to bigger and better things to come.

Great website. Thanks so much for all of the tutorials, tricks, and help!

I tried this with my test website I am working on and although there are no more instances of “Leave a Reply” within my comment-template.php (reply was changed to Comment) it’s still showing “leave a reply” within the site. Any ideas? I’ve download that file and looked again just to make sure and there is no “leave a reply” still inside of it. I feel like I must be doing something stupid and just missing the huge elephant in the room. *laugh*

Hello Kelly. This tutorial is now obsolete as indicated by the red note above. I apologize for not making a follow up since we’re still building the site internally.

But if your using Headway 2.0.7, Headway themes now overwrites that function. So just ignore this tutorial and instead click on the “Editor” button under “Appearance” in WordPress Dashboard. Make sure that the Headway Theme 2.0.7 is selected in the dropdown and click on comments.php. It is on that file where you will see “Leave a Reply” and you can make the changes in there.

This is now the case after Headway 2.0.7 came out. Let me know if you still have any problems. Thanks.
